Case Analysis: Case Studies: Lehman Brothers, British Petroleum, Monsanto, Merck, Goodyear, Perdue Farms

In the Week Three Discussion, you selected a current business problem from the following case categories:

  • Banking
  • Fuel and the Environment
  • Gender Discrimination

In this written assignment, you will present your work on the case analysis using selected components of an argumentative essay as described in Sections 9.1 and 9.2 of With Good Reason: A Guide to Critical Thinking (Hardy, Foster, & Zúñiga y Postigo, 2015). This written assignment will include a revised and polished version of your discussion work, the presentation and support of two premises, and an analysis of how your chosen ethical theory offers the best moral solution to the business problem in your case analysis.

Using the components of the argumentative essay located in Sections 9.1 and 9.2 of With Good Reason: A Guide to Critical Thinking (Hardy, Foster, & Zúñiga y Postigo (2015), your assignment should include the following:

An introduction. This is the “Problem” portion of the essay that is covered in Section 9.1: The Argumentative Essay (Hardy, Foster, & Zúñiga y Postigo, 2015). This should be an improved version of the introduction in your initial post, revised on the basis of your professor’s feedback and additional research. In this introduction you will need to (a) identify the specific issue or problem that you want to address and give an impartial presentation of the controversy, (b) articulate briefly the characteristics of the economic system that serves as the setting for the business, and (c) examine the laws that affect the operations of the business. The introduction should be one paragraph of around 200 words in length.

A thesis. Start a new paragraph with a precise and clear sentence in which you state your moral position with regard to the case that you presented in your first paragraph. This is known as stating your thesis. (See the “Thesis” passage in “The Argumentative Essay” in Hardy, Foster, & Zúñiga y Postigo, 2015). The thesis you state here should be an improved version of the thesis in your initial post in the discussion, revised on the basis of your professor’s feedback and your reading of “The Argumentative Essay” indicated above.

A thesis is only one sentence, so do not write a series of sentences, or a complex sentence with explanatory clauses (e.g., “because…” or “since…” or “according to Dr. Mary Expert, an economist with the Bureau of Labor statistics…”, or “a law that was ratified with 80% votes in favor…”). An example of a precise and clear thesis is this: “Factory farms are not morally justifiable” or, of course, the opposite point of view: “Factory farms are morally justifiable.” Keep in mind that your thesis in this assignment will be the basis for the argumentative essay of the Week Five written assignment, so take your time when formulating this thesis.

Ethical theory. In the same second paragraph as the thesis statement, identify the ethical theory that supports your moral position. You may choose from utilitarianism, duty ethics, or virtue ethics. Present the characteristics of the ethical theory in a broad sketch, and include citations and references in APA form. Then, apply your chosen ethical theory by explaining how it lends itself to the moral position that you are defending.

Two premises. Present at least two reasons in support of your thesis and these should be presented in the form of a claim. These are called premises. Articulate each premise in one clear and grammatically correct sentence. Review Section 9.1 of With Good Reason: A Guide to Critical Thinking (Foster, Hardy, and Zúñiga y Postigo, 2015). Start a new paragraph for each.

In the rest of the paragraph, support your premise by presenting an analysis of how the ethical theory lends itself to the best solution. This analysis includes articulating the characteristics(s) of the economic system at work that support the claims in your premises. It also includes examining the effects of the law(s) at work that also support the claims in your premises.

Comparative analysis. In the final paragraph, analyze how this application lends itself to a solution that is superior to that offered by one of the ethical theories that you did not select. To do this, provide a clear statement describing the moral solution offered by this other theory. For example, if you chose utilitarianism to apply to your case, then you can choose from either virtue ethics or deontology for your comparative analysis. Explain in no more than three sentences what moral solution would result from the application of this other ethical theory. See the “Sample Case Analysis” in the required reading for an illustration of how this would look like. Finally, analyze the strengths of the moral solution presented by your chosen ethical theory in ways that demonstrate how it is superior to the moral solution offered by the other ethical theory.

Take Test: Unit VII Assessment

Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Materials requirement planning takes information from the master schedule that is a detailed plan for future production. Because of the needs of the firm, the master schedule must be stated in terms of complete assemblies. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Defend your position.

If you are in the business of making roller skates, would the wheels needed be dependent or independent on the production levels? Would the demand for roller skates be dependent or independent?

Discuss the importance of the master production schedule in an MRP system.

Assume you are building custom motorcycles. All custom bikes use some standard parts. Part number HD-60 is stocked in your inventory of component parts. Each year you use about 2,000 HD-60 components at a cost of $25 each. Storage costs, which include insurance and cost of capital, amount to $5 per unit of average inventory. Every time an order is placed for HD-60 components, it costs $10. (a) How many items of HD-60 should be ordered at a time? (b) What are the annual costs of ordering HD-60 components? (c) What is the annual cost of storing HD-60 components?

Product A is an end item and is made from two units of B and four of C. B is made of three units of D and two of E. C is made of two units of F and two of E. A has a lead-time of one week. B, C, and E have lead times of two weeks, and D and F have lead times of three weeks. Show the bill of materials (product tree structure).

You have a business in which you sell very inexpensive items and very expensive items. Would you use a fixed-time period or a fixed-quantity period model to order the expensive items? Explain your decision.

Holding cost is handled differently in MRP and EOQ models. Describe those differences.

In cases where demand is difficult to predict, which probability models would you use so that the risk associated with stock out is managed? Briefly describe how each model would be used.

The question of flexibility within a master production schedule depends on several factors. Unless some operating rules are established and adhered to, the system could become chaotic. What techniques does management use to maintain a reasonably controlled flow through the production system?

Part III: Regression and Correlation

Based on what you have learned from your research on regression analysis and correlation, answer the following questions about the Body Fat Versus Weight data set:

  • When performing a regression analysis, it is important to first identify your independent/predictor variable versus your dependent/response variable, or simply put, your x versus y variables. How do you decide which variable is your predictor variable and which is your response variable?
  • Based on the Body Fat Versus Weight data set, which variable is the predictor variable? Which variable is the response variable? Explain.
  • Using Excel, construct a scatter plot of your data.
  • Using the graph and intuition, determine whether there is a positive correlation, a negative correlation, or no correlation. How did you come to this conclusion?
  • Calculate the correlation coefficient, r, and verify your conclusion with your scatter plot. What does the correlation coefficient determine? Discuss the strength of the correlation coefficient calculated, and if the correlation is positive or negative.
  • Add a regression line to your scatter plot, and obtain the regression equation.
    • Does the line appear to be a good fit for the data? Why or why not?
    • Regression equations help you make predictions. Using your regression equation, discuss what the slope means, and determine the predicted value of weight when body fat is zero. Interpret the meaning of this result.

Part IV: Putting it Together

Your analysis is now complete, and you are ready to report your findings to your boss. In one paragraph, summarize your results by explaining your findings from the statistical measures, hypothesis test, and regression analysis of body fat and weight for the 252 men attending Silver’s Gym.

Unit I Assessment Test 6

  1.  In today’s fast paced world, there is a tendency to ‘over-commit’ by taking on too much at one time. Think of a time when you agreed to take on something that you really did not have time to do well. What was the outcome? What could you have done differently to achieve a better outcome? Have you ever declined a request to work on a special project or committee due to time constraints? What was the outcome of saying ‘no’?
  2. Your team has been complaining about excessive demands in the workplace and you have been put in charge of developing a plan for dealing with these excessive demands. Describe what your plan will contain. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.
  3. Explain the importance of human, social, and relational capital in the workplace, and provide examples of when each may be used. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.
  4. What are the challenges of negotiation outsourcing contracts for your employer? What are the potential problems you may face when negotiating I-deals with employees? Use examples to support your response. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Part I: Statistical Measures

Statistics is a very powerful topic that is used on a daily basis in many situations. For example, you may be interested in the age of the men who attend Silver’s Gym. You could not assume that all men are the same age. Thus, it would be an inaccurate measure to state that "the average age of men who attend Silver’s Gym is the same age as me."

Averages are only one type of statistical measurements that may be of interest. For example, your company likes to gauge sales during a certain time of year and to keep costs low to a point that the business is making money. These various statistical measurements are important in the world of statistics because they help you make general conclusions about a given population or sample.

To assist in your analysis for Silver’s Gym, answer the following questions about the Body Fat Versus Weight data set:

Click here to download the Body Fat Weight data set.

  • Calculate the mean, median, range, and standard deviation for the Body Fat Versus Weight data set. Report your findings, and interpret the meanings of each measurement. Notice you are to calculate the mean, median, range, and standard deviation for the body fat and for the weight.
  • The measures of central tendency are important in real-world situations.

    • What is the importance of finding the mean/median? Why might you find this information useful?
  • In some data sets, the mean is more important than the median. For example, you want to know your mean overall grade average because the median grade average would be meaningless. However, you might be interested in a median salary to see the middle value of where salaries fall. Explain which measure, the mean or the median, is more applicable for this data set and this problem.
  • What is the importance of finding the range/standard deviation? Why might you find this information useful?

Assignment 1: Product Development

Due Week 3 and worth 160 points

Health services continue to affect the gross domestic product, and this dramatic transformation has great demands on each dollar spent to deliver patient-centered products. Health care marketing must be repeatedly applied and practiced strategically to include environmental dimensions, such as technology, socioeconomics, competition, and regulatory.

That being said, in today’s global economy, investors and potential entrepreneurs must tap into the so-called “unexplored” market. In this aspect, health care establishments must utilize marketing, advertising, as well as sales strategies when pursuing new customers (e.g., suppose a health care investor wanted to build a small hospital in a rural community); this would entail exploration and logistical experimentation to determine who will patronize the facility. In an impoverished neighborhood, the feasibility of having lucrative profits may see diminishing returns, and so the venture may be not worth the effort. Also, suppose that the potential investor wants to sell mosquito deterrents (e.g., bedside netting in malaria-infested regions of Asia or Africa); then it would be wise to investigate the number of beds that are actually in the village, and who would be willing to purchase them. These activities take into account the investor portfolio, as well as the feasibility of marketing and selling the product. Such exploration also examines competitors, cultural differences, and—most important—identification of the customer.

Identify a local health care establishment (e.g., hospital, rehabilitation center, emergency medical center) and determine its product development practices. Utilize concepts from previous weeks to substantiate information, as needed. You may develop the discussion based on the ideas presented here, but feel free to inject any salient marketing strategy that you believe might support your presentation.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Justify the purpose of the selected health care establishments’ product(s) / service (s) and their associated life cycle(s).
  2. Suggest one (1) strategy to improve the marketing mix of the selected health care establishment. Support your strategy by highlighting one (1) benefit of (1) portfolio analysis and providing two (2) examples that display differential advantages.
  3. Assess the importance of technology in providing patients with clear and accessible information about health care organizations and the product(s) / service(s) that they provide.
  4. Outline a survey to capture patients’ expectations regarding the delivery and / or accessibility of product(s) / service(s) identified.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze how products evolve through the four stages of the product life cycle.
  • Determine the appropriate product succession planning efforts of health care services.
  • Examine the marketing research process and market segmentation strategies in the health care industry.
  • Evaluate marketing research tools involved in the marketing process.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in health services strategic marketing.
  • Write clearly and concisely about health services strategic marketing using proper writing mechanics.

Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.
  4. Do you think it is possible to have a persuasion which is too logical? Why, or why not? Give an example of how you can use logic and reasoning to help persuade your audience without the logic actually damaging the negotiation process. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.
  5. The textbook lists check for understanding as a key skill necessary for persuading other people. Create a scenario where you might need to persuade someone in a business setting, and explain how you will use the check your understanding skill in your efforts to get your way in the negotiation. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

For this Assignment, write a 4–6 page paper (double spaced, not including title page or references) that answers the following questions (use the subheadings/numbered questions below to organize your paper):

Part 1

Now that you have learned all the phases in the BPM model suggested by your book, it is time to take a step back and look at the overall model. As Chapter 10 discusses, many process management models are based on the PDCA (plan-do-check-act) cycle. There’s a lot of research on adopting and applying the PDCA model to various specific contexts.

For the first part of this Assignment, answer the following questions:

1) If you had to categorize the 10 phases you learned into the PDCA categories, where would each phase fall?

2) Are there any phases that do not fit within the PDCA cycle? Why do you think this is- is this an improvement to the PDCA cycle to fit the BPM effort better?

3) Do you think the model that you have covered in this course needs one or more phases added to cover something that is currently missing?

Part 2

This course has often touched on the importance of proper communication. Collaboration and communication is critical in many of the project steps, may they be the discovery of problems with a process, establishing expectations, or searching for means to improve. The class also discussed methods for improving the efficiency of workshops.

Things become more complicated when a process extends beyond a single location. When a process involves partners in another country, this complexity is increased much more. With the use of outsourcing in so many organizations, this challenge to effective communication is faced frequently.

In this second part of the Assignment, you will explore issues that are particular to this situation. Answer the following questions:

1) What are some commonly seen problems involving communication between business groups when some of these groups are in another country? Research and provide two real-life examples.

2) Provide two recommendations for handling the problems you have identified in question 1. How can an effective BPM project be carried out when the teams face these challenges?

Description:

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

You have a manager's meeting approaching, and you need to be prepared to discuss the selected topics.

The following statement has been brought to the attention the management team:

  • Healthcare organizations should get rid of employees that do not match their organizational culture.

Address the following:

  • Explain your position on the statement.
  • Include at least 2 reasons to back up your position.
  • Discuss any potential legal or ethical issues that might be encountered if this type of policy is implemented.
  • Based on your position, what issues might you run into in your meeting?
In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

DB................

The Concept of Probability

MAIN DISCUSSION POST:

  • Paragraph 1: Based on your experience thus far in this class, what is the probability that you will receive an "A" grade? Explain the factors you have used in arriving at this probability assessment.
  • Paragraph 2: Do you believe that all students in your class will arrive at the same probability assessment that you have? Why or why not?
  • Paragraph 3: Explain what is meant by subjective probability. Research the Internet, and provide a business-related example in which subjective probability assessment would likely be used (be sure to cite your sources).
  • Paragraph 4: Provide an example of when you have personally used subjective probability assessment or how you might use it in the future.

Please do not use quotes or copy definitions. You will not receive credit for understanding the materials if you use the words of others. Keep in mind that since you did research and you have citations in the body of the post, you must also place a reference list at the end containing the textbook and the articles cited.

Do not use file attachments. It is NOT necessary to upload this assignment to the Submit Files area. Your 4 paragraph (300 words) main post must be submitted to the Discussion Board.

INTERACTIVE RESPONSES:

Interactive Reply 1:

Review one student’s answer on the probability of receiving an "A" and the factors that he or she used to arrive at this assessment. How does it compare to your own?

Interactive Reply 2:

Review another student’s business-related example in which subjective probability assessment would likely be used. Assess the explanation and selected scenario. Does it show a thorough understanding of the materials?

Each post should be one paragraph in length (75 words) and must be substantive in nature.

Use of unoriginal text and excessive quotes indicates a lack of comprehension and shows that you may not have mastered the concepts.

For this Assignment, respond using the critical elements below:
Critical Elements:
• Write your original response in Standard American English, paying special attention to grammar, style and mechanics.
• Respond to the questions in a thorough manner, providing specific examples of concepts, topics, from question 1, and specific examples of the impact on you from question 2.
• Ensure that your viewpoint and purpose are clearly stated.
• Demonstrate logical and appropriate transitions from one idea to another.
• Your paper should be highly organized, logical, and focused.
As the BPM nears completion the process team must be concerned not only with the best-fit roll-out option, but also in providing information to the work team that will handle the completed process or process change to ensure they are successful. This often takes the form of "mentoring."
Mentoring is most often a one-on-one activity in which an "experienced" individual (the mentor) provides guidance and advice to someone with less "experience" (the mentee). Any mentoring relationship is, by nature of the process, a close one in which experiences, knowledge, and skills are shared.
The best way for mentors and mentees to share information is through a process called ""shadowing." Shadowing occurs when the mentee actively watches, follows, and participates in the activities, processes, or actions that are completed by the mentor. This provides a visceral and active learning environment.
To begin this Assignment please view the "videos" linked below. After watching these videos consider the BPM process you have been designing this semester and address the following:
1. Should all members of the BPM team be considered as possible "mentors"? Explain and justify your answer.
2. Who within the organization would be the "mentee(s)" for the institutionalization of the new processes? Make sure you fully support your conclusions.
3. Identify ways in which mentors and mentees can use "shadowing" as a method for establishing the changes within the company after completion of the BPM project.

Improving Organization Retention Paper
Read the following scenario:

You are an independent consultant who has recently been hired by JC’s Casino to help improve retention issues concerning the dealers and housekeepers.  Most of the dealers have been leaving the casino to work at other casinos in the area, even though JC’s Casino pays better than their local competition.  On several exit interviews, many of the dealers have cited the pit boss, Joe, as being “toxic, overbearing, evil, and incompetent.”  Joe is the casino owner’s step-son and the HR director, Tom Sneed, is afraid to confront the owner.

Among the housekeeping staff, there has been an above normal rate of absenteeism and high turnover of rooms.  Many of the managers who work in accounting, payroll, and other departments have had to ask their full-time employees to help cover for housekeeping by cleaning rooms periodically.  Because of this problem, the hotel has had to adjust their check in times from 3 p.m. (the industry standard) to 6 p.m.  Customers have arrived earlier and the hotel has had to accommodate them by creating a room to hold luggage.  They have also had to hire staff to man the luggage room.

The director of housekeeping, Andrew Keehn, has been working hard to add more staff but he states “good help is hard to find.”  The housekeeper’s current hourly wage is comparable to other casinos in the area but because of the staffing shortage, the housekeepers have to clean more rooms per day than their counterparts.  The casino owner only knows that there are some issues with keeping the dealers and that some customers were upset because they had to wait to check in.  You have been hired for a quick fix and your suggestions were needed yesterday.

Write a 1,400- to 1,700-word paper in which you identify each issue and make recommendations to JC, the casino president, on how to improve overall retention. What the scenario does not provide, you can create. Be sure to include the following in your assessment:

·         Evaluate at least two work motivation theories and how they can be applied in order to improve employee recruitment and retention at JC’s Casino.
·         Examine possible occupational stressors that are negatively influencing recruitment and retention.  What improvements would you suggest to alleviate these stressors?
Examine the role of job satisfaction and its influence on retention at the casino. Provide recommendations for improving job satisfaction of the employees and how that can play a part in successfully improving retention.

·         Discuss counterproductive employee behavior occurring at the casino. What suggestions would you make to reduce the counterproductive behavior and increase productive employee behavior?

Include at least three peer reviewed references.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Unit 8: Assignment
One of the key elements in realizing benefits is the establishment of a baseline. Your book suggests that the completion of metrics is an essential step at the time of modeling the current processes, and it is this baseline from which improvements are measured. In this Assignment, you will apply this concept to your project. You will also carry out a mathematical analysis of a fictional situation and make a determination about success.
To help you prepare for the Assignment, please view this Kaplan Math Center video on percentages on “Interpreting Percentage Problems.”
For this Assignment, answer the following questions (use the subheadings/numbered questions below to organize your paper):
Question 1 – Establishing baselines
In Unit 1, you described the goals for the organization and in Unit 2 you described how the process you selected supports the company strategies. In Unit 4, you talked about some specific goals for your project. In Unit 5, you selected metrics that would be used in establishing a baseline. In this unit, revisit the metrics that you selected for your baseline. For each metric, clearly discuss the following:
1) Describe what the metric is. How is it calculated and used currently?
2) What kind of a change in this metric would constitute success for your project? How did you arrive at this figure? If this target change figure is not possible to estimate now, then describe how you would compute it if you were actually carrying out this project. Who would be involved and where would the data come from?
Question 2 – Case analysis
Read the following case study and answer the questions at the end.
In 2009 it was decided that ABC Tire Company would implement a BPM project with the goal to decrease the manufacturing cost per tire and increase revenue from each tire sold.
To track the success (or failure) of the project they determined the following baseline data for 2009:
Total # of Tires Sold
Materials Cost Per Tire
Labor Cost Per Tire
Average Retail Price Per Tire
Average Profit Per Tire
22,594
$21.23
$12.67
$119.00
$85.10
After implementing the BPM project ABC Tire Company reviewed the value of the project after a year and identified the following information:
Total # of Tires Sold
Total Materials Cost
Total Labor Cost
Average Retail Price Per Tire
27,669
$672,080.32
$313,280.56
$122.13
Using the data provided above calculate and fill in the following table:
Materials Cost Per Tire
Labor Cost Per Tire
Average Profit Per Tire
% Increase or Decrease in Materials cost Per Tire
% Increase or Decrease in Labor cost Per Tire
% Increase or Decrease in Average Profit Per Tire
Address the following questions:
1. Why it is important to ensure baseline data is accurate?
2. Was the project successful?
Directions for Submitting Your Project
Before you submit your project, you should save your work on your computer in a location and with a file name per the Syllabus naming convention. Make sure your project is in the appropriate format (Microsoft Excel® .xls file/ Microsoft Word document); then, when you are ready, you may submit on the Dropbox page.
Grading note: In the grading rubric below, you will see a section on analysis and critical thinking. The points in this section will partly be based on your ability to apply the concepts discussed in your assignment to the specific circumstances and details of the process/organization you selected. Writing in general terms without applying the concepts and analyzing your specific project may get you points in the content section, but you will lose points in the analysis section.

Project 598:   Week 5: The Award Phase - You Decide

You are Chris and Pat Smith, entrepreneurs with five years of experience investing in small businesses. Eighteen months ago you decided to invest in a catering venture with two chefs, J. P. Martin and L. L. Miller, who have culinary science degrees and five years of work experience, which includes winning a prestigious prize in a gourmet food competition. Following some extended discussions, the four of you decided to set up a business catering to parties and weddings under the name of At Your Service Scenario.

The arrangement between you was quite informal. Essentially you put up $25,000 and the chefs put up $10,000 in capital to get the operation started. You were to manage the advertising, and the bookkeeping. The chefs' contribution was to set up the kitchen and menus, cook, hire staff, and are on site to supervise all catering jobs. The agreement between you was that the profits would be split 50-50 after clearing fixed expenses.

Although the first few months were difficult and At Your Service had to use some of the investment reserves to cover monthly expenses, a good newspaper review produced a spurt of business in the third month when the company not only covered fixed costs, but distributed a profit of $250 to each owner.

Throughout the first year, you continued to make a little money, or lose a little every month, but the company has been steadily losing money in the second year and has had to use reserves in order to keep in business.

You think the problem is that the chefs do not know how to manage a business. As soon as the business seemed to be breaking even last year, you noticed that they changed menus, offering more elaborate dishes with more expensive ingredients without increasing prices. These dishes cost too much and take too much time to prepare, limiting their availability to take on more jobs.

The lack of profits forced you to take a more active role in the management of the company. Although you told the chefs to raise prices, they approved the new seasonal menus with the same elaborate dishes and the same low prices. You found out before the menus were printed and raised the prices by 10%. You have also put them on a strict ingredients budget.

Of course, all of this has not pleased them, but the $35,000 investment is rapidly disappearing. You are down to $15,000 in working capital, and you and your partner have no more money to put into the business. You are quite sure that Martin and Miller have no more money either.

Last week, you all briefly discussed dissolving the business. You are very interested in doing so; you find it hard to believe you had such bad business judgment to form a partnership with two chefs. It is possible that with higher prices and more discipline on their part profitability will improve, although you doubt that your relationship will. Alternatively, profitability may not improve and you will have to use the last of the reserves to terminate the leases on the space, the van, and the kitchen equipment.

The issues that have to be resolved are as follows:

  • How you will split the $15,000 left in the investment?
  • How to handle the lease on the kitchen space, which has 18 months more to run?
  • How to handle the lease on the van, which has 18 months more to run?
  • How to handle the lease on the kitchen equipment, which as six months more to run?
  • What have you learned this week that would ensure that each of the above outcomes would be a win/win situation?

There are a variety of options for distributing the remaining capital. You take the remaining capital giving the chefs nothing; you take $12,000 leaving $3,000 for the chefs; you take $10,000 and they take $5,000; you split the capital evenly; you take $5,000 and they take $10,000, you take $3,000 and they take $12,000; you leave all the remaining capital for them. You need to recoup as much as your investment possible to open an alternative venture. You recently began to look at the possibility of opening a flower shop, although you have not yet done extensive planning for it. To do so you need capital. You also do not think that the chefs deserve the capital because they caused the business to fail.

You also need to rent space for this new venture, and you were thinking that you might take over the lease on the store front space that you rented for the catering business. The only problem is the kitchen, which you really do not need and don't want to have to pay a premium price for. Your options are to promise the chefs that you will make the storefront lease payments; to have the lease amended to be in your names only (which would cost about $500); terminate the lease and pay the $1,000 penalty; have the lease amended to remove your names (same $500 cost); accept the chefs' promise to pay the lease. All in all, you think it is better to leave the lease alone and just promise the chefs that you pay it rather than pay the fee for changing the names on the lease, terminating it, or paying the fee to assign it to them. You are concerned that if they took over the lease and then later could not make payments, you would still be responsible.

You could certainly use the van leased for the catering service for flower deliveries. Your options for the van are similar to those for the storefront space. You could promise the chefs that you will make the van payments, have the van lease amended to be in your names only (which would cost about $500); terminate the lease and pay the $1,000 penalty, have the lease amended to remove your names (same $500 cost); accept the chefs' promise to pay the van lease. You are concerned that if the chefs took over the lease and then later could not make the payments you would be liable. Your first preference is to promise the chefs that you will make the payments. If necessary, you are willing to make the $500 payment to take their names off the lease. You have the same concern about the van lease as you do with the storefront lease, if you turn it over to the chefs before the end of the term of the lease, you will still be responsible for payments they do not make. Your preference is to take the van's lease over yourselves.

You have no use for the high quality cooking equipment that was leased for the catering business. You have a similar set of options for the kitchen equipment as you have for the storefront and van. You assume the chefs will continue in the cooking business and can use the equipment. It would be all right with you if they took over the lease. You understand there is no charge to remove your names from the lease agreement. However, you think the best all-around solution is to terminate the lease for the kitchen equipment.

You are to meet with the chefs to try to dissolve the partnership. Review the comments of the Key Players, consult the Grading Rubric in Doc Sharing, and then answer the following questions:

  1. How you will split the $15,000 left in the investment?
  2. How to handle the lease on the kitchen space, which has 18 months more to run?
  3. How to handle the lease on the van, which has 18 months more to run?
  4. How to handle the lease on the kitchen equipment, which as six months more to run?

Course Project, Part 2 - Due Week 7 Back to Top

For CP-2, we will leave CP-1 behind and start fresh. CP-2 is a financial analysis of a new Indoor theme park project. You will utilize the provided project information/data to create a new project schedule which will represent your project at a specific point during implementation. You will load the information/data into Microsoft Project where the data will serve as the basis for project monitoring and control and Earned Value Analysis. The output of the analysis, combined with a control plan, will be used to support the continuation of your project.
The CP-2 Project Performance Report will be structured with the following sections:

    • Cover Page including assignment, project title, course, and student contact information.

  • Table of Contents
  • Executive Summary which "summarizes" the content from the entire document with quantifiable highlights such as overall project cost and schedule performance, estimate to completion, and makes the pitch to project stakeholders to continue the project.

  • Schedule 1 a schedule displayed on a MSP Gantt chart schedule (required) which incorporates the provided project data, established baseline, and proper review date representing the anticipated 50% completion date . A Gantt chart is a graphical representation of the schedule and NOT a table of dates. .
  • Performance Analysis utilizes Earned Value data to analyze the project cost and schedule performance.
  • Estimate at Completion includes a forward-looking estimate of the project completion date and the final project costs.
  • Control Plan which provides a corrective action plan to bring the project back in line with your project baseline.
  • Revised Estimate at Completion which includes the corrective actions from the control plan along with the resulting cost impact and schedule impact.
  • Schedule 2 including revised MSP Gantt chart schedule (required) which reflects the impact of your corrective actionsThis should meet the requirements of the original project plan.

NOTE: Each section should include the detail as described above, along with a proper discussion about the included data as well as the project manager's analysis/interpretation of the information You will use your Microsoft Project data in the report but will not be graded on the Microsoft Project file. .
Background data for the CP-2 project can be found in Doc Sharing under the Course Project category. This file also contains detailed instructions and help.
Submission Requirements

  • CP-2 must be submitted as a single document in MS Word. Information or details created with other tools like Excel or MS Project such as tables, charts, or graphs must be incorporated into the MS Word submittal as an inserted object, such as a JPEG. (For help with MS Project, see the Video Tutorial link below.) Failure to follow this requirement will result in the return of the proposal for re-formatting to the requested MS Word format.
  • You may insert objects into the body of your paper to support your discussion if they are half a page or less. Larger items should be included in an appendix with appropriate references to this information. You should not use imbedded links to files in the body of the report and they are not recommended for the appendix. If they are used and do not open they will considered not there.
  • CP-2 must include a cover page and Table of Contents.
  • As a guide, the body of CP-2 should be between five and ten pages in length (i.e., not including cover page, appendix, etc.).
  • Submit the Word document to the Week 7: Course Project, Part 2 Dropbox.

DQ 1

There are two distinct sides of any negotiation. In many cases, people tend to review contract negotiation from the buyer's perspective. However, no analysis of contracts and negotiations would be complete without considering the seller's perspective on bid participation and negotiation. The bid/no-bid decision requires analyzing the risks versus the opportunities of a potential business deal before deciding whether or not to proceed.

This week, we will consider the buyer's and seller's decision to participate on a bid. Consider the following:
  • What are some factors that would be taken into consideration in whether to participate in a bid? Please share any examples that you may have from your experience with bids.
  • What tools are available to help us make a good bid/no bid decision?
  • What are some implications of declining a bid on a particular project?
  • Consider and explain the role of research as it pertains to a bid decision.
Your text has some interesting perspectives on this material, which you may wish to review. You can also research bids on the Web if you feel you need some additional information and examples.

DQ 2
Page 100 of our text mentions best practices for buyers and sellers in the pre-award phase. Do you see any potential conflicts between the two sets of suggestions? For best practices in the seller's list, explore a conflict from the buyer's side. Help your classmates consider other conflicts.

Give an example of a negotiation conflict that you have had (buyer or seller), and explain how the situation was resolved. Review what your classmates write, as all of this will offer a variety of examples of what kind of conflict can happen during a negotiation.   This will come in handy later when we explore negotiating.

Unit 5

MT400: Business Process Management

Unit 5: Assignment

For this Assignment, write a 4–6 page paper (double spaced, not including title page or references) that answers the following questions (use the template below to organize your paper):

The understand phase is where you set yourself up for success for the rest of the project. In addition to getting a good understanding of your process and the issues, you also create baselines for comparison using metrics (step 4). One other key tactic in this phase is to identify quick wins (step 9) to allow everyone to gain confidence and provide justification to continue with the project.

In this Assignment, you will first look at possible metrics that can be used in your process and then identify potential quick wins.

For the first part of the Assignment, list three metrics that you think can help you quantify the performance of the process. List and define the metrics clearly, explain why this metric is important in the assessment of the process and then give an example of the statistic units. If your metric is “speed of processing” which is defined by how quickly each employee audits a tax form, the example would be that on average you would expect eight tax forms audited per hour.

In the second part of the Assignment, identify two quick wins for your process. Describe what they are, how they can be accomplished quickly, and why they will provide a boost to the project.

Part I - Metrics

Metric 1:

1. Definition

2. Significance in assessment

3. Example

Metric 2:

Problem 3.5

Brandywine Homecare, a not-for-profit business, had revenues of $12 million in 2011. Expenses other than depreciation totaled 75 percent of revenues, and depreciation expense was $1.5 million. All revenues were collected in cash during the year and all expenses other than depreciation were paid in cash.

a)      Construct Brandywine’s 2011 income statement.

EXAMPLE:

Brandywine Homecare

Statement of Income

Year Ended December 31, 2011

Revenues:

            Total revenues                                                 $12,000,000

Expenses:

            Expenses                                                         $  9,000,000

            Depreciation                                                    $  1,500,000

                 Total Expenses                                           $10,500,000

Net Income                                                                 $  1,500,000

b)      What were Brandywine’s net income, total profit margin, and cash flow?

Brandywines Net income is $1,500,000 (Total revenue – Total expense)

Profit Margin = (Net Income/revenue) x 100= ?

Cash Flow = Net income + Depreciation= ?

c) Now, suppose the company changed its depreciation calculation procedures (still within GAAP) such that its depreciation expense doubled. How would this change affect Brandywine’s net income, total profit margin, and cash flow?

·         Depreciation would be 3,000,000 Hint: (Cash Flow = Net income + Depreciation)

(Total Revenue) - (Total Expense) = ? (Net Income)

(Net Income/Revenue) x 100 = ? (Profit Margin)

(Net Income) + (Depreciation) = ? (Cash Flow)

d) Suppose the change had halved, rather than doubled, the firm’s depreciation expense. Now, what would be the impact on net income, total profit margin, and cash flow?

·         Depreciation would be $750,000

(Total Revenue) - (Total Expense) = ? (Net Income)

(Net Income/Revenue) x 100 = ? (Profit Margin)

(Net Income) +(Depreciation) =? (Cash Flow)

Problem 4.5

a) How does this balance sheet differ from the one presented in Table 4.1 for Sunnyvale?

b) What is BestCare’s net working capital for 2011?

Hint: Total current assets -Total current liabilities = Net working capital

c) What is BestCare’s debt ratio? Hint: Total debt divided by the Total assets= Debt Ratio

How does it compare with Sunnyvale’s debt ratio?

Problem 4.6

a) How does this balance sheet differ from the ones presented in Table 4.1 and Problem 4.5?

b) What is Green Valley’s net working capital for 2011?

Hint: Total current assets – Total current liabilities= Net working capital

c) What is Green Valley’s debt ratio? Hint: Total debt divided by the Total assets= Debt Ratio

How does it compare with the debt ratios for Sunnyvale and BestCare?

Activity-based costing differs from traditional costing systems in a number of ways. In activity-based costing, non-manufacturing as well as manufacturing costs may be assigned to products. And, some manufacturing costs may be excluded from product costs.

  1. Discuss other differences between activity-based costing and the traditional costing systems.
  2. Discuss the reasons that activity-based costing may be resisted by top management.
  3. Discuss why activity rates are important to management.
  4. In your opinion, why activity-based costing approach is probably unacceptable for external financial reports.

The controller of Chicago Company is in charge of installing a new costing system that includes the allocation of indirect manufacturing costs to the producing departments. After studying the situation, he found there were three cost drivers that could be used to assign the indirect costs, each with its own merits. After computing the allocations for the departments on a sample month, he found that each cost driver favored (that is, assigned less costs to) a different department. Machine hours favored Department X, direct manufacturing labor hours favored Department Y, and number of processing steps performed favored Department Z.

  1. What additional factors must the controller consider before deciding on an allocation base for the indirect manufacturing cost assignment to the departments?

MT400: Business Process Management

Unit 4: Assignment

For this Assignment, write a 4–6 page paper (not including title page or references, double spaced) that answers the following questions (use the template provided):

The launch pad phase is where a lot of foundational work on a project is done and the lines are drawn. In this Assignment, you will answer 4 questions:

1) Who are the stakeholders in this process, besides those that are directly involved in the execution of it? List at least two people/groups and explain their relationship/connection to the process. Make sure to describe what they expect from this project.

2) What are some goals for this project? In Unit 1, you described the goals for the organization and in Unit 2 you described how the process you selected supports the company strategies. Now, list the goals for your selected process: What is this process intended to accomplish? What constitutes success? Be specific about both of these two elements (definition of goals and success).

3) Based on the definitions provided by the Keen Process Worth Matrix (see table 15.2), how would you categorize the process you selected?

4) Table 15.3 provides some risks and ways to mitigate these risks. Pick the risk that you think is most likely to impact your selected process and describe how you would move to mitigate it. Be specific about your actions with respect to your selected organization and process; do not simply repeat back the suggestion by the book.

Follow this template for formatting your paper:

Stakeholders

Stakeholder 1:

1. Relationship/connection

2. Expectations

Stakeholder 2:

1. Relationship/connection

2. Expectations

Weaknesses: These are characteristics of a company that are weaker than its competitors are. If a company is weak at something, but its competitors are as well, then it is not a weakness.

Opportunities: These are issues that are external to a company that can affect the company and its competitors in a favorable way.

Threats: These are issues that are external to a company that can affect the company and its competitors in an unfavorable way.

Trends: These are developing opportunities and threats.

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom
discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of
students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every
student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB
question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by
others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will
be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the
contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and
thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue
by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first
contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of
each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each
week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early
and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance
and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through
sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB
question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a
conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of
each unit.

While information systems has one meaning, it can be used in different ways
for companies to keep a competitive edge on the marketplace. Compare and
Contrast two distinctly different organizations on how they use information
systems in their organizations.

Include in your post the following:

Research the 4 competitive strategies and briefly describe them.
From the 4 strategies, pick 2 and provide an example of a company that uses
each strategy.
How do they implement the strategy?
Provide examples of how the companies use the strategy, and do not simply
write the description.
Appraise the individual and organizational consequences of the use of
information technology and recognize potential security breaches and
computer crimes.
Properly reference the companies in your post if required using APA format.

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and
comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your
postings.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources,

The informational approach in measuring organizational effectiveness Select a data collection questionnaire or tool that has been designed by a healthcare organization to obtain feedback on their overall effectiveness or the effectiveness of a particular information system within the organization. These may be questionnaires that are administered online or in paper form. There are several ways to find such questionnaires. For example, they may appear in a journal article reporting on their use. Some other possible sources of instruments or information about instruments include:  Survey Instruments in IS: http://home.aisnet.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=675 âETS Test Collection. http://www.ets.org/test_link/about Spend some time reviewing the mission and goals of the organization you select so that you understand what they are trying to accomplish and why the questionnaire was used for evaluation. The names (and sources) of the instrument and the company in which it has been used should be included in your work. Analyze the instruments to determine the following: • Who is likely to receive and complete the questionnaire, and who is not? (Be sure to identify and briefly describe the organization in which the instrument has been used.) • Why has the organization created the questionnaire or survey? Is it valid for this purpose? • How difficult will it be for someone to analyze the answers? • What is likely to be learned from answers submitted? • What effect are the answers likely to have on the organization? What role would this information play in improving the organization's effectiveness? • Finally, describe how you would redesign the survey and explain how your revisions would improve it.

Develop the strategic objectives for your business in the format of a balanced scorecard. The strategic objectives are measures of attaining your vision and mission. As you develop them consider the vision, mission, and values for your business and the outcomes of your SWOTT analysis. Consider the following four quadrants of the balanced scorecard when developing your strategic objectives:

Shareholder Value or Financial Perspective, includes strategic objectives in areas such as:

  • Market share
  • Revenues and costs
  • Profitability
  • Competitive position

Customer Value Perspective, includes strategic objectives in areas such as:

  • Customer retention or turnover
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Customer value

Process or Internal Operations Perspective, includes strategic objectives in areas such as:

  • Measure of process performance
  • Productivity or productivity improvement
  • Operations metrics

Learning and Growth (Employee) Perspective, includes strategic objectives in areas such as:

  • Employee satisfaction
  • Employee turnover or retention
  • Level of organizational capability
  • Nature of organizational culture or climate
  • Technological innovation

Develop at least three strategic objectives for each of the following four balanced scorecard areas identified above (Financial, Customer, Process, Learning and Growth). Your objectives should be selected, in part, based on an evaluation of a number of potential alternatives to the issues and/or opportunities identified in the SWOTT Analysis paper and table you completed in Week Three. Base your solutions on a ranking of alternative solutions that includes an identification of potential risks and mitigation plans, and a stakeholder analysis that includes mitigation and contingency strategies. You should also incorporate the ethical implications of your solutions into your selection.

For each strategic objective, develop a metric and target using a balanced scorecard format. (For example, a strategic objective in the shareholder or Financial Perspective is to increase market share. A metric to actually measure this strategic objective of market share increase is, "The percentage of increase in market share." The target is the specific number to be achieved in a particular time period. The target for the metric of "Increase market share" could be "Increase

  • market share by 2% for each of the next 3 years" of an increase of 2% per year for 3 years.)

Write a 700- to 1,050-word summary that explains your critical thinking on how you derived your objectives from your vision, mission, values, and SWOTT analysis.

Format paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Unit 1

MT400: Business Process Management

Unit 1: Assignment

Our book proposes a business process management (BPM) model that consists of 10 phases. Over the next few weeks, as you learn about each of these phases, you will be applying the concepts to a specific business process. The Assignments in this course constitute a course-long project in which you will evaluate various aspects of this process.

You will select the process you will use in this Assignment. You will prepare the foundation for your project by identifying a real-world organization that would benefit from applying the business process management (BPM) model in the workplace. You may select the organization where you currently work OR where you previously worked. If possible, you should strive to choose an organization and process that you have knowledge about. If you select an organization that you do not have direct contact with, be sure you can gather sufficient information (via the library, the internet, or by interview) about the organization and its operations.

It is important to select a process that will provide a good basis for applying the 10 phases that are coming up. Since you do not know what these phases entail just yet, it is difficult to know what kind of a process works best. To get a better understanding of what is coming up, it is recommended that you carefully read the two and a half page summary of the 10 phases that starts on page 56. This may give you an idea of what type of questions you will be asking about the process you select.

For this Assignment, write a 4–6 page paper (double spaced, not including title page or references) that includes the following components (use the subheadings below):

Organization

Identify and provide details regarding the organization for which you will be presenting information about the BPM model. Include the company name, location, size, and primary business area (What does the business do?). Also describe what connection you have to the organization, if any. If not, explain how you will gather information about their operations.

Process

Describe the business process that you have selected, as you did in the discussion. Clearly state:

1. The objective of the process.

2. The scope (Where the process begins and ends).

3. A brief description of those involved.

In order to ensure the process you select is rich enough to support this project; your answer to

the items in the following checklist must be “yes.” Briefly explain each item:

• Significance: Does this process have some strategic significance or a significant impact

on the operations of the organization?

• Scope: Does this process have various stakeholders, in addition to multiple people

involved in its execution?

• Ambiguity: Is it possible to list the steps in this process, from beginning to end?

• Outcomes: Are there specific goals and deliverables associated with this process that

can be listed and measured?

Justification

1) How can this business or organization benefit from learning about the BPM model?

2) What unique challenges will this organization have in using or implementing the BPM?

Grading note: In the grading rubric below, you will see a section on analysis and critical

thinking. The points in this section will partly be based on your ability to apply the concepts

discussed in your Assignment to the specific circumstances and details of the

process/organization you selected. Writing in general terms, without applying the concepts and

analyzing your specific project, may get you points in the content section, but you will lose

points in the analysis section.

The tensions between science and culture extend far beyond disputes over evolution. In some cases, science and culture disagree on not just what is true, but how actions should be taken in the real world. The story of Kennewick Man is a perfect example of this.

In 1996, while two tourists were visiting Kennewick, on the Columbia River in Washington, they stumbled across a human skull. After the police collected the skull and an almost completely intact skeleton, they determined that the bones came from a Caucasian man. But strangely, there was no murder investigation. This is because, in a very strange twist, Carbon-dating tests showed that the bones were more than 9,000 years old - much older than the earliest recorded Caucasian visits to North America in the 14th century.

Anthropologists, paleontologists, biologists and archaeologists all whipped themselves into a fury of excitement over these bones, which were soon given the name "Kennewick Man." Everyone, it seemed, wanted to study these remarkably well-preserved remains. At the same time, the local Umatilla Indians, whose ancestors have lived on the Columbia River for thousands of years, claimed the rights to rebury the remains, under the North American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). To this ancient tribe, the bones are sacred remnants of their ancestors, and as such, they should be returned to the ground.

Before you begin this week's discussion, read Edward Rothstein's article, "Antiquities, The World Is Your Homeland", and think carefully about the complicated ownership issues in this case.

Once you have read the article, visit the PBS website about Kennewick man, focusing on the anthropologists’ justifications for studying the remains:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/first/claim.html

Debates over human remains and repatriation continue. More recently, additional human remains possessed by the University of California, San Diego, have been the center of a custody battle similar to that of the Kennewick Man. Review the basics of the dispute here:

  • Taking Sides: First, take a side in this controversy by outlining the following:Learning from our mistakes: Without question, similar problems will be faced in the future as scientific exploration continues, and remains are likely to be found. Although the scientific method provides us with a framework for how to conduct our research using the remains, it does not take into account the ethics of scientific research. What are some additional criteria you could add to the scientific method in order to ensure that research is conducted in a moral and ethical way? Provide an example of an area of research/science that requires a code of ethics when suggesting your modifications to the scientific method.
    • Who do you think deserves ownership of the remains in each case and why?
    • What should be done with these remains, and what concessions would this require the scientific community and/or the tribes to make?
    • Respond to your classmates' posts and work together with them, as a class, to come up with some compromises to this issue.

A major producer of plastics in the United States is about to expand its business. As part of this expansion, it will begin to sell its products in Europe and Asia. In addition, it plans to open a plant in Asia. Jerry, the President and CEO, is concerned; he has heard many stories of companies that have tried to expand globally but operations either failed miserably or did not live up to expectations due to the cultural differences between workers and customers in each country.

Jerry has asked your group to research problems other companies have had with this issue and develop ways in which the errors and missteps those companies made can be avoided by his company.

As a group you should select a multinational corporation or international nonprofit agency that has encountered these problems (this can be a previous or current employer of yours). Using the Internet and the library, each individual in the group will research the organization to discover any cultural barriers that organization encountered and what its managers did to try to overcome those barriers.

Please note that this assignment has both a group component and an individual assignment.

Group Component:

  • As a group generate and evaluate reasons why people may not appreciate the cultural point of view of others. Each individual in the group should at least 5 resources or materials (citations) (three of the five citations may come from the textbook)
  • As a group discuss how appreciating cultural diversity affects peoples' ability to communicate effectively in the context of a multinational corporation or an international nonprofit agency. Feel free to add your own experiences as well as quoting others. Please share the resources, materials and citations that you find and collect on the small group discussion board.

Individual Assignment:

Each individual in the group should create and submit their own 2–3 page paper.

Each individual paper should summarize the group discussions and provide suggestions regarding the steps that the company can take and policies that can be put in place to help ensure the company's expansion is successful. Eah individual can draw from the resources and materials shared on the small group discussion board in the processof developing their individual paper. Each individual paper should contain at least 5 references, with at least 3 sociological references which may include the course textbook materials.

Impacts of a borderless society

We live in a world where geographic boundaries cease to exist when it comes to goods, services, and even food. We think nothing of having freshly squeezed orange juice or kiwis for breakfast, even if we live in New York City with 10-inches of snow on the ground in the middle of January. We live in an age where everything and anything is available for consumption year-round at your local grocery store. Convenience comes with potentially major ecological and economic impacts that are both positive and negative. For example, the coffee you drink may come from beans imported from Columbia, the sugar you use may come from India, or the steaks you sear on the grill may have come from Argentina. How much fuel was spent transporting these products across the ocean? Were any pesticides used? If so, was it done in a sustainable fashion? Were forests cleared to make room for grazing herds or larger agricultural fields? These are just a few of the many questions we should be asking ourselves when we make our selections at the grocery store
Explore the following resources in the Kaplan Library, along with the link from the United States Department of Agriculture, to learn more about the foods we rely on and the variety of ways in which we can acquire them.

For this assignment, you will write an essay in which you analyze a meal provided to you by your instructor in the weekly announcement. Address the following questions as you write your assignment.
  • If you were to purchase each item at a local chain grocery store, where would these items be sourced? For example, where were the fruits, vegetables, and/or meats grown immediately prior to sale? Do not discuss the history or origin of the item i.e., “corn or maize originated in Mexico around 2500 BC.”
  • Discuss the events and methods of production that allowed your local grocery store to carry these items. What farming methods were likely used to grow these items and how do these methods impact the environment around the farms as well as the employees who work within these establishments
    • Were the items grown and shipped in from another country?
    • What types of processing and packaging must take place in order for you to be able to purchase the product? If you were to follow the suggestions shared within the articles provided above, where could you purchase the items (name specific local places within your community)? If a food item is not available locally, is there an alternative that you could use as a substitute?
  • Discuss the ecological and economic advantages and disadvantages of purchasing food items that are locally sourced versus those shipped from other areas of the country and from around the world. Use your textbook reading for this unit in order to explore the environmental impacts, and use these to further analyze the impacts our food purchases may have on the environment.
  • The food choices we make have the potential to generate both local and global impacts. This can be summarized in the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” Based upon your analysis of the meal provided by your instructor for this assignment, discuss how the choices you make when planning and buying meals might change in the future and how your choices, when combined with those of others, can have a global impact.
This essay should be a minimum of 1,000-words in APA style format. Provide appropriate citations and references for any information you use in this paper. Your paper should include a minimum of five sources. These can include those provided within the project directions and the course materials. Be sure to avoid copying and pasting large sections of text from any given source. For help with citations, refer to the APA Quick Reference.

2. Effective Presentation - Effective Presentation

Description:

You are the newly appointed President of the local Chamber of Commerce. You are making your first presentation to the Chamber and want to make a good first impression.

Your presentation will be based on the following topic, purpose, and audience.

  • Topic: Expected U.S. GDP growth rate going forward
  • Audience: Local chamber of commerce
  • Purpose: To give business leaders an idea of what the economy may look like based on recent history and expected future conditions

Part I

Write a 600-750 word research paper given the topic, purpose, and audience information above. In addressing GDP, consider the following:

  • Trends, forecasts, and statistics
  • How GDP is determined
  • Interpreting GDP

Part II

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation, consisting of at least 15 slides, to supplement your research paper and be presented to the Chamber of Commerce of an area of your choice. As with any effective presentation, the PowerPoint should be in color, have at least one chart, and clip art on other slides.

PowerPoint - Presentation Guidelines

The following guidelines for your PowerPoint presentation will be used to grade your work as well:

  • Limit the number of words on slides. Slides are designed to supplement your presentation—not to be your presentation (in this assignment, it is to supplement your research paper).
    • Avoid paragraphs
    • Use bullet points
    • Use succinct phrases instead of sentences
  • Limit each slide to 6 bullet points
  • Simple fonts
    • Fonts "with feet" are easier to read (in a paragraph)
    • Fonts "without feet" make nice titles
  • Choose color combinations that make your presentation easy to read.
  • Limit graphics to 1-3 per page. Too many graphics can be distracting.
  • Bells and whistles tend to be distracting for the viewer. Make sure that special effects have a purpose. Proofread and spell check.

As the fund manager for a large mutual fund, you are preparing for a conference call with all your major investors. You plan to e-mail everyone with an attachment that will serve as a guide for the upcoming call. You know investors' time is limited, so you want to be focused in your brief report. Because there are numerous figures to discuss, you will be including 1 or more charts all in the same document.

For each of the following points, prepare both a paragraph of commentary and an appropriate chart to support it.

  • Find the last 4 years' sales and profit or net income data for a major retail corporation.
  • Calculate profit as a percentage of sales; be careful to place the decimal point correctly.
  • Prepare a paragraph of explanation/interpretation of the data as if this were a small part of a lengthy report to potential investors.
  • Prepare a chart to display all the information in a meaningful way.

Suggestions for Responding to Peer Posts

Review your peer's chart and commentary, and consider the following questions:
  • Is their commentary sufficient support for the chart and enough information to supply potential investors with?
  • Is the chart understandable or confusing?
  • What do you think about the chart design?
  • Were the sales, net income, and percentage of sales calculated correctly? If not, explain what went wrong and provide the correct calculations.

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

• To show how Multi-Nationals establish and maintain their presence in the market.

Understanding Marketing Management in 21st Century

Coca Cola is one of the most renowned brands in history. Each day people in more than 200 countries around the world consume more than 1.7 billion beverage servings. Marketing in 21st century requires maintaining the long time marketing principles while inventing new ways to keep up to date. Coca cola which started its operations in 1883 has successfully kept its brand up to date for over 100 years. The revenues for Coca Cola were 48.0 Billion USD for 2012. Coke’s first president employed many of the marketing principles that have now become well entrenched practices. To gain new customers, he printed coupons for offering free taste of Coca-Cola drink. To build brand recognition he distributed clocks, calendars and weighing scales with Coke’s logo to the distributors. He hired the company’s first Celebrity Hilda Clark in 1890. During Second World War army shipped cokes to soldiers in Europe and Asia under the image of All American beverage. However now Coke realized it needed a more local feel in each country. The red and white wave signature and lettering is the same worldwide but different ad agencies in different countries give the brand a local touch. It offers more than five hundred brands for countries across the globe.

Despite its magnificent status it needs to grapple with the difficulty of declining effectiveness of TV ads due to media fragmentation and with the use of TIVO device that help viewers zap commercials. Ads that reached 70% Americans in 1960’s only reached 15% in 2004. So Coke which has been investing money on TV commercials is now finding new options for stimulating its presence in the market. For example it has used the idea of Coke red lounge gathering areas for teens in malls. These lounges offer

exclusive music videos, video games and sell coke drinks from a see-through coke machine. For Britain Coke’s website mycokemusic.com web-site enable downloaders to download over 250,000 songs. In Pakistan Coke Studio enables viewers to enjoy songs sung by local singers.

Chris Lowe a, Coke marketing executive explained methodical steps for making a fresh Ad campaign. “There’s the communication strategy that you want to put across. You test it with consumers for validity and resonance. Then you take that core meaning and make it come alive with advertising. Then you take it back to consumers to test it again.”

In 2011 Coca Cola celebrates its 125th anniversary with innovative cultural events. Coca Cola fabricated Give It Back racks. They were made up of 100% recyclable material to be used in grocery stores. Coca Cola in collaboration with Heinz launched the concept of innovative plant bottle packaging. It is first ever Pet plastic bottle made partially from plant material. It is recyclable like all other plastic bottles except the difference that it has replaced a rare resource ingredient (Petroleum and other fossil fuels) with plant based material. Thus the use of virgin petroleum based material can be saved.

SELECTED ORGANIZATION: FORD MOTORS

The report plan is a plan written for the professor explaining what the report will consist of. Your audience is the professor. (The report plan is different than the actual report.)

Create a plan that identifies what information you will need to prepare a justification report making a recommendation to an organization to implement a particular product, service, or program. The organization may have a business, governmental, professional, or social focus.

The report may focus on a “real” or “made-up” recommendation, but you should direct the report to an actual organization, even if you do not plan to actually submit the report.

For the report, the audience within the organization will be whatever level is most appropriate to make a decision on the topic of your report.

  1. Identify the recipient of the report. (To what organization will the recommendation be directed?)
  2. Identify the topic of the report. (What product, service, or program will you recommend?)
  3. Identify the purpose of the report. (What need or problem will the product, service, or program resolve?)
  4. Identify potential resources that will be needed for support.
  5. Identify methods to be used to gather information.
  6. Identify criteria to be used to evaluate the information collected. (What factors will you consider to make your recommendation?)

The document should be formatted according to APA style. Write the plan in essay (paragraph) format with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The plan should be at least 300 words long and double spaced.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
